Eliazabeth died in 1603 and James Ⅰ(1603- 1625)came to the throne---a united England to a divided one. B. Charles Ⅰ(1625-1649)—the religious tyranny of Archbishop Laud wasadded the policial tyranny of the King--between royal court and parliament; between aristocrats and middle class; between the Anglican Church and the puritans and radical protestants C. 1642 outbreak of the Civil --1649 beheading Charles Ⅰ D. England became a Commonwealth run by the Parliament with Oliver Cromwell: a military dictator E. after Cromwell’s death, the monarchy was again restored—Charles Ⅱ(1660-1685-a period of the Restoration.)--James Ⅱ(1685-1688) F. Another crisis came in the Revolution ---William of Orange(1688-1694,-1702) (husband of the king’s daughter Mary)came to the English throne. “The Bill of Rights”- presented to him by Parliament, which restricted the power of the English king. ---Glorious Revolution The results of the revolution:The beginning of modern England; the final victory of political liberty for which the Puritan had fought and suffered hardship for a hundred years. Literature: The main literary form of the period was poetry.Among the poets, Milton was the greatest.
