I.TOPIC: James Joyce and Araby II. OBJECTIVE(S): A)Introduction to James Joyce B) The main plot of the novel Araby C) Themes of the novel D) Study of the important points E) Assignment Topic 1—Introduction to James Joyce ● James Joyce is regarded as the most prominent stream-of consciousness novelist, concentrating on revealing in his novels the psychic being of the characters. ● Writers kike Dorothy Richardson, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf concentrated all their efforts on digging into human consciousness, and they created unprecedented stream-of-consciousness novels such as Pilgrimage, Ulysses and Mrs. Dalloway. ● The modernist writers such as Richardson, Joyce and Woolf are mainly concerned with the public life of an individual. ● Among the great writers of the modern period, James Joyce might be the greatest in radical experimentation of technical innovations in novel writing. ● Besides poetry and short stories, James Joyce wrote two modernist novels, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. ● In Ulysses, his encyclopedia-like masterpiece, James Joyce presents a fantastic picture of the disjoined, illogical, illusory, and mental-emotional life of Leopold Bloom, who becomes the symbol of everyman in the post-World-War-1 Europe. ● Ulysses, James Joyce’s masterpiece, gives an account of man’s life during one day (16 June, 1904) in Dublin. The whole novel is divided into 18 episodes in correspondence with the 18 hours of the day. ● The novel Ulysses describes the mental activities of two Dubliners in a single day. This formless, plotless novel records the thought, shades and fleeting flashes of the mind. ● In his novel Ulysses, James Joyce intends to present a microcosm of the whole human life by providing an instance of how a single event contains all the events of its kind, and how history is recapitulated in the happenings of one day. ● The three major characters in Ulysses, James Joyce’s masterpiece, are, Leopold Bloom, an Irish Jew, his wife, Marion Tweedy
