General characteristics of literature in the Revolution Period The Revolution Period was one of confusion in literature due to the breaking up of the old ideals. The Puritans believed in simplicity of life. They disapproved of the sonnets and the love poetry. John Milton showed unconquerable revolutionary spirit in his works. So this period is also called the Age of Milton. 3. Literature of this period Two antagonistic camps: the Royalists（保皇党人 ） and the Puritans.
