General characteristics of literature in the Revolution Period The Revolution Period was one of confusion in literature due to the breaking up of the old ideals. The Puritans believed in simplicity of life. They disapproved of the sonnets and the love poetry. John Milton showed unconquerable revolutionary spirit in his works. So this period is also called the Age of Milton. 3. Literature of this period Two antagonistic camps: the Royalists(保皇党人 ) and the Puritans. The Metaphysical Poets(玄学派诗人): John Donne, Andrew Marvel, George Herbert The Cavalier Poets(骑士派诗人): Robert Herrick, Ben Johnson John Milton: the greatest poet in this period John Bunyan: the great prose writer in this period John Dryden: poet and playwright Robert Burton: The Anatomy of Melancholy 《忧郁的解剖》,Gloomy Age The metaphysical poets were a group of British lyric poets of the 17th century, who shared an interest in metaphysical concerns and a common way of investigating them, and whose work was characterized by inventiveness of metaphor, i.e., metaphysical conceits(巧智), an extended metaphor that combines two vastly different ideas into a single idea, often using imagery. John Donne 1573-1631 Ⅱ. Analysis on John Donne’s poems Donne is the founder of the Metaphysical School. He is well-known for his frankness, penetrating realism and cynicism. He emphasizes his thought by fantastic metaphors and extravagant hyperboles. “The Sun Rising” and “The Flea” are the two popular poems..
