ABSTRACTAs ABSTRACT As the mainstay of China’S hotel industry，the technical efficiency of star hotel not only reflects the level of the whole hotel industry’S technical efficiency，but also has influence on the development of the technical efficiency of the whole tourism industry．Moreover，The development of economy， the improvement of l iving standards and the increasing tourists expand the market demand of star hote l industry．In order to adapt to the expanding market demand and take advantage of i t， the fixed assets，the number of rooms and the employees of Chinese star hotel have changed a lot．In which degree of the input factors changing into output of Chinese star hotel，the variation of input——output ratio of Star hotel and how to evaluate the competitive position of a area’S star hotel among star hotels industry are profound questions． Based on the importance and the development of star hotels， the foreign and domestic research on the efficiency of hotels， this article evaluates 31 provinces’ star hotels technical efficiency and makes a comparative analysis of the results between the two method．The mainly conclusions as follows： first，the technical efficiency of eastern star hotels iS III 万方数据 diminishing，central diminishing，central and west in turn，but the Western star hotel i S growing fastest：Second，the technical efficiency of Tianin，Shanxi，Shahbhanxl bhanghal J 1angsu ZheJlang Henan bulznou provinces are relatively higher and the areas of Hebei， Liaoning，Heilongjiang， Sichuan， Yunnan， Shangxi are relatively lower．The results also show that geographical position iS not the decisive factor to the hotel technical efficiency of star hotels：third，there has a significant correlation and difference among the results of DEA and SFA， but the SFA owns a higher technical efficiency and a small di screte degree comparing to the method of DEA：fourth，the volatility of technical efficiency to provincial star hotel has been weakened gradual ly：fift
