The following strategy assures everyone receives the same training. * * Speaker Notes: Prior to showing this slide ask the class what percentages do they think people remember when using specific senses and activities and list their answers on a flip chart. The activity/sense are: How much do we remember when we read? How much do we remember when we hear ? How much do we remember when we see ? How much do we remember when we hear and see ? How much do we remember of what we say ? How much do we remember of what we both say and do ? The Adult Learning Pyramid We all learn through our senses but each of us learns differently. You as trainers should be aware of the various learning styles and incorporate all of them in the learning process. This slide represents how much we remember based on our level of involvement. The learning styles at the top of the pyramid are passive and require no active involvement by the learner. The learning retention increases dramatically when the learner takes an active role in the learning process. In general, adults tend to remember: 10% of what they read. For most adults, learning just by reading, is one of the least effective methods. We remember about 20% of what we hear. No matter how much job knowledge you have or how good your communication skills the learner is still not going to remember much of what was said. We remember 30% of what we see. A picture is worth a thousand words. It’s better yet to see the real thing. Watching a task being performed is more effective than reading about it or having someone explain it to you. We remember about 50% of what we hear and see. When you combine an explanation with observation of the actual task the retention jumps to 50%. We remember as much as 70% of what we say.
