= Abstract My cobacterium tuber culosis (MTB) is amajor causeof human tuberculosis. A suitable animal model of MTB
infection must bepromptly established asa research tool sincethemechanismscausing tuberculosis andthe immune mech-
anisms involved in the bodys responseto MTB areunclear. Thispaper compares someof the problems common to differ-
ent rodent modelsof MTB infection already in use, which include animal strain selection, the route of infection, the infec-
tive dose, and evaluation criteria. These issues reveal the current state of research on animal models of MTB infection.
