Research Purpose and significance Research purpose Dicke ns, the greatest representative of En glish critical realism and the greatest xL. novelist in the 19 century, is noted for his portraying of the pathetic characters or events. Great expectation is one of Dicke ns excellent critical realist novels in his late years, which presents us the cruelty and hypocrisy of the capital society in the Victorian Age. It mainly describes the development of Pips growth and the disillusionment of his great expecta廿on. Pip, the main character in this novel, changes his personality from innocence to snobbishness and the change from arroganee to sincerity in different period of his life. Through the analysis of Pips characters on different period of his life, how mens pure personalities changed by the lure of outside world and the weak sides of human beings are reflected. Research significance As the competition of a well-off living become fiercely nowadays, the society tends to be a money-oriented society. Many people, especially the younger generations are at lost and perplexed whats the real value of life? The analysis of Pips character in different period of his Hfe is enlightening the younger generations, especially the generation who are seek for real self and find the real value of life. It can be an inspiration for those who have great expectation for their future but feel miserable
