Why Six Sigma The next few slides will show us the importance of reducing variation. The customer wants an 8-day order cycle time EVERY time, with no variance. Right now, the customer has a 16-day cycle time (the average) with a 17-day variation. To satisfy this customer, we must decrease variation in order to increase process performance – in this case get to an 8-day order cycle. Why Six Sigma Using a Six Sigma approach, there have been more improvements: The 8-day average still exists, but now the order cycle has been reduced significantly to a 2-day span. See how in the 2nd graph the spread of variation is more narrow than in the first graph? We want that narrow variation! Remember: customers notice VARIATION much more than averages. This is the difference between old improvement methods and Six Sigma. Why Six Sigma Why Six Sigma Here are some additional comparisons of 3.8 Sigma, which is 99% good – versus 6 Sigma, which is 99.99966% good. The differences are noteworthy. Would anyone want to go without electricity for 7 hours each month? Would anyone want the problems associated with 3.8 Sigma?? Of course not. Think about these statistics from our customers’ viewpoint. Do I (the customer) want a supplier with many, many more problems than another supplier? No! This is why Six Sigma is so important at TRW Automotive. This is why we want to get to Six Sigma.
