Unity A paragraph exists to develop an idea. It is important that each paragraph develop one specific idea and no more. If a paragraph develops more than one idea, it fails to have unity. If it does not develop an idea at all, it does not fulfill its function. Every paragraph should have a reason for existing. No paragraph should be in writing just because the writer thought it was time to indent again. A good writer is always able to give a specific reason for each paragraph in his writing. Unity Too often a writer is tempted to gather random thoughts into several sentences, indent them, and call them a paragraph. Look at the following example. It begins nowhere and goes nowhere. It has no purpose. Here is how the paragraph on a math test could become disunified: Unity A disunified paragraph: I feel quite confident about the math test that is scheduled for tomorrow. The instructor has told us exactly what to study, and my grades on homework have been good. After the test, Susan and I are going to eat and then go to a movie. She is taking me out because it is my birthday. Last week we were going to go to the homecoming game, but she was sick and we didn’t get to go. Unity I feel quite confident about the math test that is scheduled for tomorrow. (topic sentence) The instructor has told us exactly what to study, and my grades on homework have been good. (supporting sentence) After the test, Susan and I are going to eat and then go to a movie. (topic sentence) She is taking me out because it is my birthday. (supporting sentence) Last week we were going to go to the homecoming game, but she was sick and we didn’t get to go. (topic sentence) Unity The paragraph has no unity because it has no single topic. It begins with a math test and drafts into three different things: (1) the math test (2) his upcoming date with Susan (3) the missed date last week Each of these topics might be developed into a paragraph or even a complete story, but all three certainly do not belo
