Potential oil and gas exploration areas in Qaidam Basin Fu Suotang (PetroChina Qinghai Oilfi eld Company) Abstract: The latest resource evaluation results show that the Qaidam Basin contain sizable hydrocarbon resources, with conventional 8 8 resources of 61.7×10 t and tight oil resources of 0.86×10 t as well as abundant residual resources, providing a base for realizing large-scale discoveries and sustainable development. To construct the 10 million-ton class oil/gas fi elds on the plateau with long-term stable production, new breakthroughs and discoveries are highly expected through the existing exploration and development operations. In accordance with overall evaluation of the petroleum geological conditions within the basin and the exploration practices in the Kunbei, Yingdong, Dongping and Zhahaquan areas, it is proposed that paleouplift at piedmont, paleoslope at the basin margin and late active tectonic zones inside the basin control the general hydrocarbon migration and preservation, while hydrocarbon-rich sags, fault-unconformity conducting system and superior source-reservoir assemblage control the intensive hydrocarbon accumulation.
