《Abstract 《 Abstract Abstract As a key link in the English teaching process,language assessment is regulated as a combination of formative assessment with summative assessment,according to the Basic Requirements on Higher Vocational and Technical College English Curriculum(2004). However,the present researches on the formative assessment of English learning and teaching are mainly targeted at primary and middle school education,few at Vocational and Technical Colleges(hereafter VTCS)Oral English classes.Therefore,it is.of great significance to research on the formative assessment in VTCS Oral English classrooms. Guided by the theories of Constructivism,Multiple Intelligences and Humanism,the study attempts to find out whether the formative assessment based on network will improve VTCS students’English communicative competence and build up their learning autonomy and self-confidence.The study involves 78 freshmen from Jiangsu City Vocational College who are evenly divided into Experimental Group(EG)and Control Group(CG). Formative assessment such as self-assessment,peer-assessment and teacher assessment are adopted in the EG to form a formative assessment system with instruments of questionnaire,observation,interview,e-portfolio,learning logs and dialogue joumals on web—based platforms such as online blogs,QQ groups,e。mail communication,etc. The research findings are as follows:1.The tests results indicate that the participants of the EG perform much beuer in oral English than those of the CG 2.Students’interest and confidence in speaking English are greatly encouraged in the EG and the cooperation among peers is at the same time improved through more willingly sharing of ideas and learning materials.3.Their self-leaming ability is promoted with the help of the web resources.Some learning strategies such as making plans and reflecting are consciously used in the process.4.The teacher’S conceptual understanding of formative assessment iS refined through the res
