ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Tomographic SAR (TomoSAR) is a multibaseline extension of conventional single baseline interferometric SAR imaging principle to three dimensions. A real three-dimensional imaging of a scene is obtained by forming an additional synthetic aperture in elevation with a coherent combination of images acquired from several parallel flight tracks. In SAR interferometry, the phase differences between two different sensor positions are used to find a three-dimensional surface representation of the interested terrain. Contrary to this, TomoSAR has the capability to form a real geometric resolution in the height direction, separating different scatterers within the same resolution cell. Therefore, tomographic techniques offer new possibilities for many applications and inversion problem, like misinterpretations in SAR images caused by layover and foreshortening effects. With its continuous development and improvement, tomoSAR is gradually taking a great part in national defense and military, environment surveillance and national economy. The main contents and contributions of my dissertation are as follows: (1) The theories and applications of TomoSAR are introduced. Based on the elevation measurement principle of InSAR technique, the three-dimensional tomographic imaging model is built. The data focusing principle in the elevation direction is analyzed. (2) The
