3.1 Heat of Combustion
In a boiler furnace (where no mechanical work is done) the heat energy evolved from the
union of combustible elements with oxygen depends on the ultimate products of combustion and
not on any intermediate combinations that may occur in reaching the final result.
A simple demonstration of this law is the union of 1 lb of carbon with oxygen to produce a
specific amount of heat. The union may be in one step to form the gaseous product of combustion,
CO2, or under certain conditions the union may be in two steps, first to form CO, producing a
