S ince the 1970s, cogn iti e linguists ha e conducted system atic and m eticu lous studies on arious le els of language, w ith the
except of the phonem e. A s a resu lt, stud ies on phonem e in Cogn iti e L ingu istics ha e not yet form ed into an independent branch
or a unified discip line. Th is paper proposes to set up cogn iti e phonem ics. Specifically, based on the reflection of the h istory of
phonology, the paper exp lores the basic idea and them ain m ethodology in cogn iti e phonem ics and points out them ain task and
fram ework of cogniti e phonem ics. M eanwh ile, the paper offers an expedient description of cogn iti e phonem ics: adhering to the
basic idea of the embod ied philosophy and cogn iti e lingu istics, cogn iti e phonem ics, cen tered on the study of the phonem e ( in
cluding allophones) , segm ent, foot, syllable, stress, tone and in tonation and the functional relations between sound patterns and
m orphem e, syntax, sem antics and pragm atics, is an mi portan t branch of cogn iti e lingu istics, ami ing at a un ified explanation on
the system of sound by human basic cogn iti e abilities such as categorization, conceptualization and schem atization.
