II II THE CHARACTERISTICS ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION ABOUT THE LAYOUT OF THE RESIDENTIAL LAND IN THE CITY OF LIUZHOU ABSTRACT This paper used the landscape ecology theory, social ecology theory, location theory, intensive use theory and compact city as a theoretical support. Using geographic information system as a research platform, the research that was from the dimensionality of urban planning subject on the urban development and the layout of residential land of Liuzhou was not only qualitative but also quantitative. The first part, based on the development of urban construction land and evolution of urban form, researched the historical laws and characteristics of the evolution of Liuzhou residential land, from the aspect of land use size, residential construction and so on. The second part comprehensively analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of Liuzhou residential land. It assessed the nature, determined the quantity of the residential land situation with the spatial analysis function of geographic information system. On this basis, it built a model of spatial structure of residential land in Liuzhou. After dividing the land into functional areas and sample areas, it studied the current residential land situation from the view of land use intensity. The third part generalized the factors affecting spatial distribution of residential land in Liuzhou, and then made suggestions on residential land layout optimization. Finally, it made a summary and proposed prospect.
