Symbolic meaning of Mangan’s sister in Araby
A brief introduction of Araby
Araby is the third story of Dubliners, a collection of 15 short stories which form a depiction of Irish middle class life in \o Dublin Dublin?in early 20th century. The author, James Joyce, is one of the greatest modernist novelists at that time. In Araby, he takes advantage of large amount of symbolic imageries.
The story shows a boy’s hazy adoration upon his ideal lover through first-person narration. In the process of his seeking for his idealized love, the boy finally became aware of the reality and the discrepancy between the idealized world and the reality in his mind. [1]As the story develops, the boy has his dream broken. By reinvesting words with symbolic meanings, James Joyce enriches the story both in the implication and the expression.

Writers tend to use symbols for their richness of expression and depth of thoughts.
A brief introduction of the application of symbols in Araby

Some of them appear many times, such as “blind” “priest” “Mangan’s sister” etc. Some of them share the same meaning, while some differ from each other entirely. Nonetheless, they aim at one theme: an epiphany upon one’s view of rosy dream and cruel reality.
By analyzing symbols used in Araby, we can not only have a deeper insight into Joyce’s true intention, but also gain some understanding of the art of symboli
