It uses the concept of SYSTEM to describe complex phenomena. A system is a structure of objects. Their structures can be hierarchical or a network. 傳統圖層式地理資訊系統(layer based GIS)以圖層的觀念來描述空間現象。不同的主題圖資被存在不同的圖層，藉著圖層的開關套疊，展現空間元素之間的關係。圖層之間資料的一致性，必須依靠?人?去維護。 Conventional layer based GIS describes geo-objects in terms of layers. Different types or themes of geo-objects are stored in different layers.
