The nationalists were loyal to the already established Republic of China and were called the Kuomintang (KMT). They were eventually successful, and called the new nation, the People’s Republic of China (PRC). China already had a history of Confucian influence which shared many similarities to communism, such as: community over individual, serving your country and valuing the common worker since hard work was to honor family. The People’s Republic of China maintained control of mainland China, but the United States and many of its allies refused to acknowledge the PRC as the legitimate government of China, instead considering the Taiwanese government as the legitimate government of China.
