The nationalists were loyal to the already established Republic of China and were called the Kuomintang (KMT). The Cold War 1940s-1950s Chinese Civil War Chinese Communist Revolution The communists were trying to overthrow the Republic of China and establish a communist government. They were eventually successful, and called the new nation, the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
