Chapter3 Places of interest Speaking Stress nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. A. Talk time Using extra stress to highlight important words We already know two rules about speaking: 2. Do not stress other words (e.g., a, the, is, have, etc.) except for special reasons. Here is a third rule: 3. Give a little extra stress to the most important word in the sentence. Note that you, the speaker, decide what the most important word is. Ask students to say the following sentence with the stress on a different word each time, and then explain the differences in meaning. John took the book. A1. Debbie and Simon are talking about a new camera Debbie has just bought. Practice their conversation. Give a little extra stress to the words or syllables underlined twice. DEBBIE: What do you think of my new camera, Simon? SIMON: It looks a bit strange. What kind of camera is it? DEBBIE: A Toyota. SIMON: A Toyota? That’s the name of a car, not a camera. DEBBIE: But look. The name’s on the case. SIMON: I’m afraid it’s a fake, Debbie. You’ve been cheated. A2. Read the conversation below and draw an extra line under the words you would give extra stress to. Then practice the conversation. SIMON: Do you like my new watch, Debbie? DEBBIE: What make of watch is it? SIMON: A Rolex. DEBBIE: A Rolex? That must have cost you a lot of money. SIMON: Ninety dollars only. DEBBIE: Then it can’t be a real Rolex. SIMON: It’s got its name on the face. DEBBIE: Yes, but look at how it’s spelt. It’s got two ls in it. You’ve been cheated, Simon. B. Speak up Giving a short talk 1. Introduce the place. 2. Describe the place: Who would like it? What can you see or do there? 3. Talk about the cost: How much is it to enter? How much does each thing cost inside? 4. Where is it?
