Thanksgiving What is Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is a day to be thankful for the harvest and for the previous year. When is Thanksgiving? In the United States of America Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November. In Canada thanksgiving is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October. On thanksgiving Americans gather together with their families and have a big feast! This feast will typically include Turkey, sweet potato, gravy and pumpkin pie for dessert. Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for everything good in your life whether it be your family, your job, your home, anything  It has recently become tradition for many Americans to sit down and watch a football game on thanksgiving (American football that is!) Thanksgiving Origin The pilgrims left England on September 6, 1620 and arrived in America in late November. When they arrived they were unprepared for such a harsh Winter. Because of this many of them died before Spring. However they continued to pray and were assisted by helpful Indians. They managed to reap a great harvest the following Summer. Harvest – A season for gathering grains and fruit As a celebration the pilgrims had a feast lasting three days and celebrated with their Indian friends.
