Determiners What Are Determiners? Determiners refer to words which are used in the premodification of a noun phrase and which typically precede any adjectives that premodify the head word. Function In terms of function, they break into two major types: identifiers and quantifiers, each of which may have either definite reference or indefinite reference. There is a house in the middle of the street. (indefinite identifier) The house stands in the middle of the street. (definite identifier) Would you like some tea? (indefinite quantifier) Give me three hours and I can get the work done. (definite quantifier) Co-occurrence of Determiners Determiners may co-occur in the premodification of a noun phrase; that is, two or more determiners may modify one and the same head word: all the students, all the three students, all the three other students. Determiner can also be classified on the basis of their relative positions when they co-occur: predeterminers, central determiners and postdeterminers.
