All through his life, Hemingway is very interested in writing about violence, wars and bullfighting which are always connected with death. Wu Dingbai, a Chinese scholar who is one of Hemingway’s enthusiasts, writes the following lines in his An Outline of American Literature?“Almost all his?(Hemingways) stories deal with the theme of courage in face of tragedy. They reveal mans impotence and despairing courage to assert himself against overwhelming odds.?”?A Farewell to Arms once has been singled out as a novel that is sociologically realistic in its treatment of war and the love during the war period. It has the effect of reality for many who have never been to the front of the war and the effect of reminiscence for many who actually have been. Some people take this novel for the true story of Hemingway. They think it is Hemingway’s tragic losing of the nurse in Italy in 1918 if it’s said to be a love story. Whatever, to a certain extent, this novel originates from his own experience during the war and his experience about war gets fully reflected in this work. In Hemingway’s mind, the war is just like an atrocity, in which the common man is sacrificed to meaningless ideas of glory and patriotism.
