This is a familiar one from fiction and non-fiction. The professor’s talks are basically sermons, encouraging people to seek meaning in life from goodness and not material possessions. It seems to be true of all prosperous societies that people worry about where their wealth is leading them, and fear materialism will alienate them from spiritual values and make their society uncaring, selfish and money-mad.
In this extract from the book the professor gives clear expression to such ideas. The style is a very simple one.
