The ENIAC machine occupied a room thirty by fifty feet. The controls are at the left, and a small part of the output device is seen at the right. The two men in uniform were being trained to maintain the machine after it was turned over to the Ordnance Department (which sponsored the development of the ENIAC). The two women were assistants on the staff of the Moore School who helped program the ENIAC.(Van Pelt Library, University of Pennsylvania ). In 1946, a group of scientists and engineers at the University of Pennsylvanias Moore School of Electrical Engineering quietly inaugurated a revolutionary way of managing information. They called it the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). It gave rise to the modern computer industry and would eventually transform peoples lives to a degree that even its inventors could not have imagined. In 1996, the University of Pennsylvania and leading organizations in Philadelphia and around the world marked the 50th anniversary of the birth of the information age with eighteen months of exciting programs. The ENIAC 50th Celebration was a cooperative effort not only to commemorate ENIACs invention, but to explore the impact information technology has on society today and will have in the future. The volume is reduced by 6~8 order of magnitude. The power consumption is also reduced by 8 orders of magnitute.
