These files are identified by uniform resource locators (URLs) that specify the transfer protocol, the machine’s Internet address, and the file name. For example, a URL might read: http://machine.D/collection/file. Computer programs called browsers, such as Netscape’s Navigator or Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, use http to retrieve these files. New file types, such as animation and virtual reality information, continue to be developed for the WWW. Until recently, browsers had to be specially programmed to handle each new type of file. New programming languages, such as Java from Sun Microsystems, enable browsers to download helper programs that can manipulate these new types of information.
