A A cheetah (猎豹) can run 70 miles per hour. Venus and Earth are about the same size. These are the facts I’ve learned from my 8-year-old son after he watched some TV shows. These TV shows include PBS kids, Nickelodeon, and Disney Junior. I have to admit that he has a good understanding of scientific facts right now. The other day, when I talked about climate(气候) change with him, I was surprised. After a few more questions, I discovered that he’d never heard any of his favorite science TV shows mention climate change or global warming. My son can tell you everything you want to know about red pandas, except for the fact that they are endangered because of the climate change. I reached out to the three TV shows to see if there was any truth about what my son had said. I was told that except a series of Disney Junior’s programs “The Big Storm”, none of these TV shows has ever discussed the causes of climate change on our planet. It is strange, because climate change is one of the most important environmental problems of our time. Why aren’t these TV shows introducing kids to such an important topic? According to Maria Vera Whelan, spokeswoman for PBS Kids, it’s because the TV shows feel that focusing on basic science facts is the best way to serve their viewers at my son’s age. I don’t know about others, but I’d rather my kid learn more about the reducing ice than other things. And kids can deal with climate change. More importantly, they are able to begin taking action to slow down global warming. My guess is that the TV shows are afraid that talking about science on a controversial (有争议的) topic will cause them to lose viewers or advertisers. But if that’s true, and they are choosing their bottom line over the education of American children, that’s a real shame. Kids shouldn’t stay in
