PAGE PAGE 22 The Phenomenon of Sherlock Holmes in British Culture Introduction Sherlock Holmes originally created by Arthur Conan Doyle as the protagonist of his detective novels, is famous for his unique personality and his great talent in analyzing crimes. Since Sherlock Holmes first appears in A Study in Scarlet, the Sherlock Holmes stories have attracted the attention of innumerable readers and scholars around the world. The related scholars abroad write countless articles and books about the Holmes stories. His first appearance in “A Study in Scarlet” has caused a stir both in British and beyond, since then Sherlock Holmes as well as his creator Arthur Conan Doyle has been remembered by their readers. Sherlock Holmes has become the representative of justice, and the his career as “consulting detective” is associated with mystery and omnipotence by people, because every thorny cases would became simple when laid before him. As he said to Watson, when they have just met for only several days, “I suppose I am the only one in the world. I am a consulting detective. Here in London, we have lots of government detectives and lots of private ones. When these fellows are at fault, they come to me, and I managed to put them on the right scent”, 1 and his methods of “the science of deduction” in which he presented his great talent in analyzing and solving the crimes that is inaccessible to his contemporary policemen are widely recognized. “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however impossible, must be the truth”2 is perhaps his most famous perspective. Sherlock Holmes is so impressive in his characters and his talent that people are so convinced that he is real and indeed living in Baker Street 221B. It is a belief “held for years by thousands that he was an actual living human being—a circumstance that constitutes one of the must unusual chapters in literary history”3 People are so fascinated by his existence that when it comes to the moment
