Netherlands North Sea Protection Works Background Status: Netherlands North Sea Protection Works is one of the seven engineering wonders in the world. Geography: Nearly 1/3 of Netherlands’land is below the sea level. Thus, they built a series of massive flood barrier to prevent the invasion of the sea. Floods: At the end of Junuary,1953, a sea flood attacked Netherlands, leading to the loss of more than 200,000 domestic animals, 1835 deaths and thousands of homeless people. Introduction Three Stages 1.There was a coastal dam with a length of 30 km. 2.There came the Delta Works.(三角洲工程) 3.Netherlands built a anti-tide gate(防潮闸门), being part of the Delta Works. The gate was designed in 1954，and began to build in 1956. In 1986,the gate was finally completed and then put into use.Some gulf entrances were closed by the dam, which made the coastline shortened for 700 kilometers . Introduction A video about the anti-tide gate. Advantages The mouth of the river is open to the sea, so that the water in the river and the sea can get easily exchanged. It does less harm to the balance of the ecology. When the flood comes, the water will be kept out of the anti-tide gate. As a result, the land and the residents behind the “gate”are protected. Because of the “gate”,the sea-route (航道) is not blocked and the shipping business(航运业) is not affected much.
