Absolute amplitude measurements are actually measurements that are relative to the calibrator, which is a signal of known amplitude. Most modern spectrum analyzers have a calibrator built inside. This calibrator provides a signal with a specified amplitude at a given frequency. Since this calibrator source typically operates on a single frequency, we rely upon the relative accuracy of the analyzer to extend absolute calibration to other frequencies and amplitudes.
