MOLLUSK exposure, protection and estuarine life Governors Island is not the City. Neither is it park- land in the traditional sense of green amenity, nor “waterfront” in the now clichéd sense of sanitized and typically over-commercialized frontage. Instead, it is a powerfully unique place, an other-worldly island. Any new future landscape here, indeed any form of building, re-construction and subsequent pro- gramming, should not normalize or diminish the strange and powerful qualities of the place – espe- cially its dramatic outward exposure in the harbor and the weather, and its extraordinary sense of remote otherness. “Mollusk” re-shapes the topography, ecology and pro- gram of the Island to create a landscape that escapes normative description. It capitalizes upon and ampli- LOW TIDE HIGH TIDE 10 YEAR FLOOD 100 YEAR FLOOD 500 YEAR FLOOD fies the existing drama of the given site – the tides, skies, horizons, exposure to the elements and vast scale. At the same time, it creates a new living ecol- ogy, a place that engages natural process to help clean the water in the estuary while diversifying the inter-tidal zone. A dramatically shaped, large scale landscape, Mol- lusk provides the visitor with a renewed sense of sub- lime nature, temporality and surreal encounter.
