CODEX GUIDELINES FOR PACKING MEDIA FOR CANNED FRUITS
CAC/GL 51-2003
1. SCOPE
The following guidelines describe the composition and labeling requirements for packing media for use with canned fruits.
2. COMPOSITION AND DESIGNATIONS TO BE USED IN LABELLING
Any of the following packing media may be used:
2.1 WATER
2.2 Fruit juice or fruit pulp or blend of fruit juices or fruit pulps, unsweetened or sweetened with e.g., foodstuff with
sweetening properties such as sugars or honey 1. Sweetened fruit juice or fruit pulp, depending on the concentration in Brix
degrees (°Brix) measured in the final product, shall be designated as follows:
2.2.1 Lightly sweetened greater than or equal to 14°but less than 18°
2.2.2 Heavily sweetened greater than or equal to 18°but less than 22°

2.3 Syrup: mixtures of water and foodstuff with sweetening properties such as sugars or honey . Depending on the
concentration in °Brix measured in the final product, these shall be designated as follows2 :
2.3.1 Extra light syrup or slightly sweetened syrup greater than or equal to 10°but less than 14°
2.3.2 Light syrup greater than or equal to 14°but less than 18°
2.3.3 Syrup (optional) greater than or equal to 17°but less than 20°
2.3.4 Heavy syrup greater than or equal to 18°but l
