Life and career Byron’s early years had been far from happy. (impoverished noble family, clubfoot, father squandered away money and deserted his mother, mother petted and abused him ) At ten, was made Lord Byron. Then studied at Harrow and Cambridge. Byrons first published volume of poetry, Hours of Idleness, appeared in 1807. In 1809, Byron took his seat in the House of Lords In 1816, Byron raised his voice in defence of the oppressed workers in his well known Song for the Luddites. A few days after Byron delivered his parliamentary speech, the first cantos of his Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1809)were published. He also wrote a great number of lyrical pieces. In 1815,Byron married Miss Milbank, unhappy marriage On April 25, 1816, he set sail for Europe, never to return. Byron first went to Switzerland, where he made acquaintance with Shelley. From Switzerland he went to Italy(1816-1823), Byron took an active part in the revolutionary work of the Carbonari. These were also the most fruitful years in his literary career. The defeat of the Carbonari uprising(1821) was a heavy blow to Byron. On April 19, 1824, Byron died.
