Access an HMC using WebSM Learn how to configure a Hardware Management Console (HMC) so that you can access the management panel from anywhere on your network. An HMC is an important machine that manages all the logical partitions on IBM System i? or System p? servers. It provides a single point of interface for managing all the partitions. In order to perform any activity on these partitions, you have to physically go to the server room. Going to the server room each time makes life a little difficult, especially when this machine is kept on a separate floor or at a distant place. Although this procedure introduces a possible security concern, it provides the flexibility to respond faster. Introduction Web-based System Manager (WebSM) is a Java?-based tool available for both Windows? and Linux?. WebSM code resides on the Hardware Management Console (HMC) machine so that you can download and install it using a Web browser. It provides the same interface as you see on your regular HMC. HMC usually comes with an additional network card, which can be configured for WebSM (in other words, eth1). 2. Log in to HMC and open the management panel, as shown in Figure 2.
