- - PAGE # - 课时跟踪检测(一)In troduction Read ing — Pre-readi ng 阅读理解 A Are the British people Europea ns ? This may seem a stra nge questi on to Africa ns and Asia ns, who tend to think of all white men as Europea ns. But the British, whe n they are in Brita in, do not regard themselves as Europea ns. The Europea ns, to them, are those rather excitable foreig ners from the other side of the En glish Chann el, who have never learnt how to speak English. Europe is “the Continent ”: a place full of interest for British tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus, although geographically speaking Britain is a part of Europe, yet the fact that it is a separate isla nd has made its people feel very, very insular (孤立的). They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe and they sometimes annoy continental nations by failing to support them, or eve n to un dersta nd them, in time of n eed. Where did the British people come from ? This is an extraordinary interesting questi on, si nee they are a mixture of many differe nt races , and all these races in vaded Brita in at various times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Brita in before the Roma ns came duri ng the first cen tury B. C., but there had bee n at least three in vasi ons before that. T he first of these was by a dark-haired Mediterra nean race called the Iberia ns. The other two were by Celtic tribes: first the Gaels, whose descendants are the modern Scots and Irish, some of whom still speak the Gaelic Ianguage ; and second the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Roma ns conq uered. The Roma ns gave the Brit ons a good deal of their civilization, but they never settled in Britain in very large numbers, so the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the “ barbaria ns ” , i . e. the nu merous Germa nic tribes which overra n the whole of Wester n Europe. 语篇解读:文章对“
