Prof. Kastunori Nagano, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan Introduction My first UTES experience in Hokkaido University from 1982 under Prof. Ochifuji Average temperature and heating degree day in Japan Energy consumption in Hokkaido Fraction of energy consumption in the civilian sector is large 48% for Hokkaido and 56 % for Sapporo 29% on the national average Energy consumption in household is large 61% of energy is used for the heating CO2 emission:3.35 CO2–ton/person/year in Hokkaido 2.5 CO2–ton /person/year on the national average Quite high degree of dependence on oil 75 %, particularly over 94 % in house heating section Approximately 55 % on the national average Departure from dependence on oil from economical strategical point of view For the reduction of CO2 emission Energy consumption of a typical good thermal insulated and air tightened house in conformity with the Canadian R-2000 regulation built in January, 1994 in Sapporo, Japan Oil and electricity consumptions for 10 years from January, 1994 to January, 1994 Oil consumption for heating: 12,900 L       on an average: 1,290 L / year Oil consumption for DHW : 3,700 L     on an average: 370 L / year Electricity consumption including cooking heaters: 3,800 kWh   on an average: 380 kWh  Increasing energy consumption in civilian sector Household section: 2001/1990 = + 22 % Commercial section:2001/1990 = +29 % High efficiency and low environmental impacts Low CO2 emission No exhaust gases No exhaust heat to the air to prevent the Heat-Island phenomena Cost competitive system Simple Long life Maintenance free Comfort to the human Better indoor thermal environment Low noise and vibration Compact Safety Heating system in northern part of Japan 2.
