Dynamic channel allocation and power control; Various strategies have been proposed and/or adopted to obtain further improvement in system performance.; One approach is the use of directional antennas to reduce the number of interfering signals with which a desired signal has to contend ; Another approach is that of reducing cell size, hence gaining more cells in a geographic region, with consequent increase in capacity, with a given reuse characteristic included. ; Cellular systems are, in fact, moving toward a hierarchy(分层) of cell sizes: larger cells, called macrocells; microcells and picocells. Microcells, to be used, ideally, in the more crowded urban environments where the traffic load does dictate(驱使) reducing the cell size (base station antennas and their attendant (附属的) transmitter-receiver systems may be located at the reduced height of street lamp posts); and picocells, to be used principally(主要) in indoor cellular systems. ; We discuss two techniques in this chapter: dynamic channel allocation (DCA) and power control . Some simulation(仿真) studies have shown that the combination of DCA and power control can provide substantially (相当大的) greater improvements in system performance than the use of either technique alone .;4.1 Dynamic channel allocation; The allocation of channels to cells described in the previous chapter has implicitly(含蓄地,暗中地) assumed fixed channel allocation (FCA): groups of channels are assigned permanently(永久的) to given cells following a prescribed (规定的,指定的 )reuse pattern. ; Recall from the previous chapter that, with the reuse strategy described there, the total available set of channels is divided into C groups, each group then being assigned to a specific cell in a cluster of C cells。; DCA refers to a variety of techniques in which channels may be allocated to users in a cell in accordance with varying traffic demands.
