ｓｏｍｅｔｈｉｎｇ，ａｎｙｔｈｉｎｇ及ｎｏｔｈｉｎｇ特殊用法归纳

众所周知，英语中 something 常用于肯定句中， anything 常用于否定句中， nothing 表
否定。但在高考阅读中遇到含有这些词的一些句子时，学生们常感到莫名其妙，难以理解。
如：
1. You might think that “global warming ” means nothing more than a rise in the world ’s
temperature.(2005 D 篇 )
2. After all, Ed ’s idea of exercise has always been nothing more effort-making than lifting a
fork to his mouth.(2003 完形填空 )
3. And I had an uneasy feeling he had something there.(2002 完形填空 )
本文拟就这些词的特别用法加以总结，相信会对大家有所裨益。
一、 something
1. 表示 “不简单的事；可观的成绩；有些地位的人 ”。例如：
She thinks she ’s something since she won the beauty contest.(有些地位的人 )
We must believe that each of us is able to do something well, and that, when we discover
what this something is, we must work until we succeed.( 不简单的事 )
2. 用于一些动词短语中 :
1) have something on 拿着某人的把柄。例如：
Although Miss Brown is not a good worker, her boss does not fire her because she has
something on him.
2) make something of 小题大做；瞎猜测；凭 …… 吵架 / 生气；看懂意思。例如：
When girls see another girl with a boy, they often try to make something of it.
Ann didn ’t like what Mary said about her. She tried to make something of what Mary said.
I apologize for the untidiness of my letter, but I hope you can make something of it.
3) make something of onesel f / one ’s life取得成功 , 有出息。例如：
He’s a clever boy —— I hope he ’ll make something of himself.
4) see something of someone 有时见到某人。例如：
I hope we ’ll see something of you now that you live nearby.
5) something tells me 我想 / 感到；我有理由相信。例如：
Somethin g tells me my watch isn ’t quite right.
Something tells me she ’s lying.
6) have / be something to do with 和 …… 有关 / 联系。例如：
I think Guy Fawkes i
