Europe also had the highest proportion of land degraded by deforestation, at 9.8%, compared with 1.7% for Oceania and 0.2% for North America. Overall, overgrazing is the main reason for land degradation and also represented the major cause for Oceania. Europe was most affected by land degradation in the 1990s and deforestation and over-cultivation were the main reasons.
