Paper number ITS-2749 Distributed acoustic sensing technology for congestion and incident management Russell Pinchen, Principle ITS Engineer, New Zealand Transport Agency, 1 Queen Street, Auckland 1000, New Zealand, +64 9 928 8721, Email: Russell.Pinchen@t.nz, Henry Wu, Director, J.Y.W. Consulting, 12 O’Connell Street, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia, + 61 405 202702, Email: henry.wu@.au Abstract Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) has the unique ability to convert a longitudinal fiber optic cable into a continuous array of virtual microphones enabling users to monitor long linear assets. As a technology, DAS has already found use in the oil & gas and security industries monitoring oil pipe lines and for perimeter intrusion detection. This paper presents the key findings from a trial that has applied DAS to traffic and incident detection on a road network for the first time, and subsequent integration to operational systems. The DAS detection trial was retrofitted to an existing communications fiber optic cabling running adjacent to 40 km section of State Highway one (SH1) in Auckland, New Zealand. This demonstrated a key benefit of DAS - 40 km of telemetry was delivered in two days with no traffic management or disruption to the road surface. The trial has gone on to demonstrate the benefits of a unique traffic and incident detection system, exploring fiber configurations, understanding the limitations and learning how to interpret the outputs. The project has meet or exceed all benefits and is now signed off for operational use. The technology continues to be developed with further benefit realization expect
