Assignment: Can books and stories about characters and events that are not real teach us anything useful? (only 11) The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle once said, “books enlighten the mind.” For all of us, the stories in books and literature are closely correlated with our own lives, even if they are fictional. As we grapple with life and our internal problems, books have the power to teach us how to overcome adversity and prejudice. This universal theme is reflected in various works of literature. One compelling example of the idea that books can open our minds and show us how to understand humanity is shown by Khaled Hosseni’s The Kite Runner. This story unfolds through the narrative of an Afghan boy named Amir, who is coming of age in the midst of violence and conflict within his home country. After betraying his closest friend Hassan, Amir is initially tormented by his actions but believes he can escape them by immigrating to America. However, once he has settled in his new country, Amir’s memories of betrayal continue to nag him to the point where he questions the entire purpose of his life. It is not until he returns of Afghanistan that Amir is able to forgive himself by caring for Hassan’s son, an act that redeems Aamir from the seemingly insurmountable memories of betrayal. Throughout The Kite Runner, Amir show the reader how simple acts of personal forgiveness and redemption can alter the course of one’s life. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne similarly reveals one character’s personal growth in the face of adversity and prejudice. The protagonist, Hester Prynne, is forced to wear the letter A, connoting the sin of adultery, on her bosom as punishment for her illicit affair with Mr. Dimmesdale. Hester is looked down upon by Puritan society, which completely denounces her sin as an unforgivable act. Despite the circumstances, Hester overcomes this social prejudice that has defined her personal identity by reaching out to the community. By the con
