EMBEDDED SYSTEMS LAB FREESCALE SEMICONDUCTOR S12UB PRELAB EXPERIMENT #8 PRELAB EXPERIMENT #8 D-Bug12 Hot Connect and Troubleshooting User Programs Materials Freescale S12UB MC9S12DG128 (DG128) University Board S12UB (Distribution Disk) CD. Personal Computer with a serial port interface. Acrobat Reader and terminal emulation program like Hyperterm or TeraTerm. Power supply; 120VAC to 12V DC mini-jack (2 to 4 Amp). DB9 RS-232 Serial Interface cable (Straight through no null modem). PRELAB D-Bug12 Hot Connect Objective: Understand D-Bug12 Background Debug Mode (BDM) Hot Connect, hardware and firmware commands. Background: With embedded system design there will always be a risk that software test was incomplete. It is possible for a latent software bug to go undetected during initial bench testing, only to show itself just prior to product launch or in the field. Also problematic, is the fact that the bug may be intermittent. That is, only appearing occasionally when working in the actual system. Some difficult bugs may block the user interface, if present, making it difficult to interrogate the system to find out what the program is doing. In many cases, one must be careful not to reset the microcontroller while debugging. A reset could hide the bug, only to have the bug return some time later. In these situations D-Bug12, through the BDM interface, can be used to hunt down the pesky software bug. The technique is known as BDM HOT CONNECT, and describes the connection of the tool BDM OUT to the target BDM IN, while both tool and target are powered and running. Communication between tool (host) and target (system) is done using the bidirectional BKGD pin on the DG128.
