Tess of D’Urbervilles
Tess of the dUrbervilles is one of the best
and most popular work by Hardy.
It initially appeared in a censored and
serialized version in the British illustrated
newspaper The Graphic in 1891 and in
book form in 1892.
It challenged the moral standards of late
Victorian England.
It is a representative work of naturalism.
Story
The novel has a cyclical pattern, which can be
divided into three parts:
The first part is a prelude, telling how Tess
leaves home and encounters Alec . She
returned home to her family to give birth to
Alec’s child who died soon after he was born.
This is the first cycle, beginning in May and
ending in August .
The second part is the main love story of
Tess with Angel at Talbothays. Angel left
Tess and Tess wandered around,
seeking a job. This part begins in May,
reaches its climax at the turning of the
year and ends in the following winter.
The last part represents her decline. Tess
was forced to return to Alec. Angel came
back to Tess and sked for forgiveness.
Tess killed Alec, and was finally arrested
and executed. This part starts in winter
and ends in spring.
Naturalism in Tess of the dUrbervilles
Tess seems to be led to her final
destruction step by step by Fate.
Coincidence adds one wrong to another
until she is caught up in a dead-end:
Tess’s father, John learned from the
village parson that he might have noble
blood
Tess’s father knowing the family’s noble blood
+ the accidental death of the family horse
Tess’s claiming kin
Working on the poultry farm
Quarreling on the way back
Raped in the black forest
Letter under the carpet, failing to tell her past to Angel
