Chapter 7 Cont inuous
Probability Distribut ions
GOALS
1.Understand the d ifference between d iscrete and
cont inuous d istribut ions.
2.Compute the mean and the standard dev iat ion for a
uniform d istribut ion.
3.Compute probabilit ies by using the uniform
d istribut ion.
4.List the characterist ics of the normal probability
d istribut ion.
GOALS
5.Define and calculate z values.
6.Determ ine the probability an observat ion is
between two po ints on a normal probability
d istribut ion.
7.Determ ine the probability an observat ion is above
(or be low) a po int on a normal probability
d istribut ion.
The Fam ily of Uniform Distribut ions
The uniform probability
d istribut ion is perhaps the
simplest d istribut ion for a
cont inuous random variable.
This d istribut ion is rectangular
in shape and is defined by
m inimum and max imum values.
The Uniform Distribut ion
– Mean and Standard Dev iat ion
The Uniform Distribut ion - Example
Southwest Arizona State University prov ides bus serv ice
to students while they are on campus. A bus arrives at
the North Main Street and Co llege Drive stop every 30
m inutes between 6 A.M. and 11 P.M. during weekdays.
Students arrive at the bus stop at random t imes. The
t ime that a student waits is uniform ly d istributed from
0 to 30 m inutes.
The Uniform Distribut ion - Example
1. Draw a graph of this d istribut ion.
2. How long w ill a student “typically” have to wait for
a bus? In other words what is the mean wait ing t ime?
What is the standard dev iat ion of the wait ing t imes?
3. What is the probability a student w ill wait more than
25 m inutes?
4. What is the probability a student w ill wait between 10
and 20 m inutes?
The Uniform Distribut ion - Example
1. Draw a graph of this d istribut ion.
The Uniform Distribut ion - Example
2. Show that the area of this d istribut ion is 1.00
