Some will say that the past is un duly roma nticized as a frie ndlier time — that people couldn t have been much better -disposed than they are today. But I m not so sure. For one thing, people in the past in teracted with each other in pers on more tha n we do today, and this n aturally resulted in a comparatively higher level of frien dli ness. Back the n, it was both routi ne and enjoyable to shoot the breeze with others while waiting for a trolley or sitting on your front porch after work. Socializ ing face to face with complete stra ngers was com mon place. Nowadays, however, people have all sorts of devices like smart phon es, e-readers, and iPods that draw them into their own private worlds eve n while out in public. While tak ing the subway to work, you ll rarely see two people stra ngers talk ing uni ess it yell at each other. More likely, they ll be totally absorbed by the minriaeuiss s in front of them. For ano ther thi ng, the pace of life today is much faster tha n it was in the past, and as a result, people today are much more hurried and much less friendly. Those livi ng in moder n society tend to have little patie nee for idle con versati on, as they are always on their way to do someth ing or see some one. The leisurely daily rhythms characterizing past eras have been replaced by a
