Summary
We analyze and model the process of passengers boarding and deboarding an
airplane based on both macroscopic and microscopic approach.
Through mathematical analysis using interference model, we find the widely used
back-to-front boarding policy is not good. We put forward a general rule to design
efficient boarding policies: first considering outside-in and then back-to-front. In
addition, we prove that seat-by-seat is the ideal boarding procedure. We develop four
new policies: Dissymmetrical-Reverse-Pyramid, Out-Mid, Mixed 1 and Mixed 2
according to the three seats-arrange types of small, midsize and large airplanes.
We then construct a discrete boarding simulation respectively for three different
seats-arrange types. Taking many factors including boarding time and passengers’
satisfaction into consideration, we determine that small-size airplanes use seat-by-seat
policy with a practical implementation; mid-size airplanes use Reverse-Pyramid
policy; large-size airplanes use Mixed 1 policy.
Finally, we simulate the two deboarding procedures: In-Out and Ran .
Consider passenger’s hard-control beh ior, we recommend the Ran deboarding
procedure.

Airlines Try Smarter Boarding
1. Introduction
The process of airplane boarding and deboarding is experienced daily by millions
of passengers worldwide. Reductions in gate delays would yield significant economic
benefits from more efficient u f air craft and airport infrastructure and would also
improve passenger experience.
Airplanes h e adopted ariety of boarding strategies in the hope of shortening
the boarding pr
