The demand for rare earths has increased dramatically due to their important applications. Rare earths are commonly accompanied by uranium and thorium via lattice substitution due to their similar chemical structure. Severe environmental pollution is caused by the radioactivity of uranium and thorium during rare earths production. Hence, the recovery of uranium and thorium from rare earths has attracted considerable attentions of researchers. Although solvent extraction with a variety of commercially available extractants is a major technique applied to remove uranium and thorium from rare earths, it suffers from various problems such as the formation of third phase, high cost of extractants and disposal of wastes generated from large-scale use of organic solvent. However, solid-phase extraction based on modification of a solid support as adsorbents could overcome these drawbacks. Hierarchically mesoporous silica is widely used in adsorption and separation because a large quantity of smaller pores give HMM large specific surface area, and larger pores can facilitate mass transport. In this work, fibrous mesoporous silica microspheres (F-SiO2), which exhibited hierarchically bimodal mesoporous structure, were successfully functionalized with diamide phenanthroline (DP) on the surface (F-SiO2-DP). Fibrous hierarchically bimodal mesoporous structure is beneficial to retaining the pore size, specific surface area and total pore volume after modification, which lead to faster adsorption rate and higher adsorption capacity for U(VI) and Th(IV). Fig 1 Selective adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) by F-SO2-DP DP-functionalized F-SiO2 exhibits excellent selectivity for U(VI) and Th(IV) over various rare earths indicating that F-SiO2-DP has the potential to be a highly efficient and selective adsorbent for adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) that can prevent the pollution during the production of rare earths (Fig.1). 2.
