PO/MTBE MTBE AREA SHUTDOWN TO TI MTBE AREA SHUTDOWN TO TI Purpose A shutdown to TI of the MTBE Area is when the column feed has stopped, the steam to the reboiler is stopped, all levels are pumped down to less than 10%, and all pumps are shut down. All valves to and from the system are to be manually closed. A shutdown to TI is done prior to MTBE Area clearing and safing process. Conditions The Peroxidation System, Epoxidation System and the TBA Purification Area is shutdown. Maintenance is required on the MTBE System. GUIDELINE Notify Operators that a shutdown of MTBE Unit is impending. Reduce TBA Tank (OSBL) inventory (level) to a level pre-determined by supervision. Reduce feed to MTBE Unit to approximately 33,000 to 44,000 Kg/hr by cutting feed to unit by 1,100 Kg/hr every hour. Monitor MeOH/TBA ratio controller to maintain proper ratio while reducing feed rates. Feed both alcohol recycle and methanol charge through One-Step Reactors for 45 minutes. Bypass One-Step Reactors after the 45 minute interval mentioned above. ENSURE caustic injection on front-end FC-57043A is in AUTO/LOCAL. MTBE AREA SHUTDOWN TO TI Begin to reduce caustic flow as necessary as analyzer and sample results indicate a reduction of methyl formates in the MTBE Recovery Column overhead. Ensure TV-38036B is open, and that TV-38036A is closed, this is to provide cooling. Close FC-57030 steam to preheater 01E0569. Switch MTBE Drying Column bottoms to off-spec tankage when column operation or sample results indicate stream is off-test. Begin reducing IBE level in MTBE Drying Column Reflux Drum to approximately 20% to prepare for unit shutdown. Begin to lower all reflux drum levels throughout MTBE Unit to prepare for unit shutdown.
