Gothic Architecture Brief Introduction • Gothic Architecture, is a style of architecture which flourished during the peak and the end of middle ages. It evolved from Romanesque Architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance Architecture. • Originating in France in the 12th century and lasting into the 16th century ,Gothic Architecture was known during the period as “the French Style”, while the term Gothic first appearing during the latter part of the Renaissance. History Early period: The first Gothic church is the Cathedral of Saint Denis ,built in France in 1143. Cathedral of Saint Denis (圣丹尼大教堂） History Classic period: From late 1100s to middle 1200s.During this period, many world-famous Gothic churches were built one by one, such as Notre-Dame Cathedral and Cologne Cathedral. Notre-Dame Cathedral （巴黎圣母院） Cologne Cathedral （科隆大教堂） History Later period: Rayonnant Gothic and Flamboyant Gothic was developed until it was replaced by Renaissance Style in the 1500s.
