In the howling storm 在呼啸的暴风雨中
Has found out thy bed 发现了你深红色
Of crimson joy, 快活的床
And his dark secret love 他黑色的秘恋
Does thy life destroy. 摧毁了你我的生命
Introduction of two collections of poems
Songs of Innocence: It is a lively volume of poems which represent a happy and innocent world although there are evil and suffering existing.
The Lamb: represents a meek(温顺的) virtue (docile, innocent)
Songs of Experience: It paints a world full of misery, poverty, war, and repression.
The Tiger: exhibits opposing, darker forces
(powerful, terrifying, miserable)
Brief introduction of the poem
The speaker, addressing a rose, informs it that it is sick. An invisible worm has stolen into its bed in a howling storm and under the cover of night. The dark secret love of this worm is destroying the roses life.
Analysis
rhyme scheme: abcb (2 quatrains)
images: rose, worm, storm, bed
While the rose exists as a beautiful natural object that has become infected by a worm, it also exists as a literary rose, the conventional symbol of love.
Worms are quintessentially earthbound, and symbolize death and decay. (In English culture, worm and snake are the same symbols which lead to ruin and destruction)
The “bed” denotes both the natural flowerbed and also the lovers’ bed (pun). It indicates death.
Line 1: The speaker addresses the rose with phrase O rose thou art sick; this is called an apostrophe(呼语). The rose here could be a metaphor for love or passion; our ideas about which are sick.
Lines 5-6: The worm manages to worm his way into the roses bed, which suggests some kind of sexual act.
The “crimson joy” of the rose connotes both sexual
