Lesson1 Vermont “Green Mountain State” became the 14th State, 1791. Vermont is well-named. The French, led by Champlain, first explored here, and in their language “verd mont” means green mountain. Fast-running streams and rivers tumble down these green mountains — rivers that mean water power for Vermont’s factories. From these factories come machine tools, weighing scales and woolen goods. From Vermowood-working plants come lumber and pulp for the making of paper. And in her hills are layers of asbestos, slate and fine building stone. United Nations headquarters in New York City was built of Vermont marble, and the state’s own handsome capitol at Montpelier is made of native granite. Despite its rocky soil, Vermont does much farming. Vermont’s maple syrup is famous everywhere. Indians made the first syrup. They notched the maple trees and caught the sweet sap in birchbark buckets. Today many Vermont farmers have sugar maple trees. The Indians would be astonished by the plastic pipes and tin containers used today, but they would recognize the old delicious flavor. You can see Vermont “sugaring” from early March to mid-April. Vermont is a favorite vacation resort. People come to see the peaceful farms and historic towns. They camp in the mountains in the summer and ski down its trails in the winter. Some visitors return to stay. Rudyard Kipling liked Vermont so much he built a home in Brattleboro where he wrote for many years. Have you ever read The Jungle Book? The story took place in India but Kipling wrote it in Vermont!
